Doing the math - 210,210 X 15.18 = 3,190,987.80
In a recent AARP article there was a chart that showed the estimated dollar value for volunteer hours. The South Dakota rate per hour was $15.18 – if you take that times the number of volunteer hours that have been recorded at the thrift store since 1995 (210,210 hours) the dollar value is over 3 million!
What a wonderful contribution to the community – thank you hardly seems adequate…. |

Alzheimer's Disease
Q. My mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, but she seems to be declining rapidly. Doesn't Alzheimer's usually get worse slowly?
Yes, Alzheimer's disease usually worsens slowly. But its speed of progression varies, depending on a person's genetic makeup, environmental factors, age at diagnosis and other medical conditions.
Still, anyone diagnosed with Alzheimer's who seems to be progressing quickly — or who experiences a sudden decline — should see his or her doctor. The doctor will look for complicating conditions or factors that can cause a rapid, but possibly reversible, progression of symptoms in someone with Alzheimer's disease.
This could include:
· Infections, such as pneumonia, a urinary tract infection or even a common cold
· Reaction to some prescription medications, such as anticholinergics, narcotic pain relievers, sedatives, corticosteroids and some antidepressants
· Fatigue or lack of sleep
· Social or environmental changes, such as moving or the presence of new medical care staff or family members
· Vitamin deficiencies, including B-12, thiamin, niacin and folate
· Depression
· Thyroid problems, such as hypothyroidism
· Additional neurological conditions
Thank you…
· Thank you to the Pierre Mall for hosting our holiday Tree of Lights in center court.
· Thank you to Lynn's Dakotamart for their ongoing support through their We Care program. Countryside receives $100 for every $10,000 of receipts collected. This includes groceries, sporting goods and prescriptions. You can drop your slips off at the hospice office or the thrift store. Thank you to volunteer Verna Spoonemore for tallying up all the slips!
Topic: The Challenge of Survivorship
Cancer Survivors March 15 at 6:30pm There has been much discussion about when are you are cancer survivor. Is it from the moment of diagnosis or when you have finished your treatment plan? Is it after you have met the 5 year free goal? Does the meaning of “survivor” change when you move from active treatment to maintance and your medical appointments stretch from every three months to every six and even longer? How does it feel when the constant surveillance stops? Do you feel liberated, abandoned or somewhere in between? Join us on March 15 to begin this discussion – all cancer patients are invited to attend. For more information call 945-0827.
